I grew up snacking on boiled peanuts. They’re a southern thing, I guess! These are one of the best treats I can remember eating as a kid…. and I still enjoy them as an adult!
I couldn’t help but think of my beloved papa while smelling these cooking. I was so much wishing he was still here to enjoy them with me! When I was a child, wherever we went that was selling them we always got a bag. It was probably the only way he could get me to stop talking for 10 minutes! 🙂
Several years ago while out on the boat, my friend Shannon broke out a huge Ziploc bag of boiled peanuts she made in her slow cooker. All of us ate the entire bag that day! 😮 Of course I had to ask her how it was done. CRAZY EASY!
These are a perfect snack for game day get-togethers, tailgating, boating or just eating at home (like I did!). I’m planning on making a big pot for my yearly fish stew party for people to munch on while the stew is simmering!
I seasoned mine with only salt, but you can also spice them up with cayenne pepper, Old Bay seasoning, garlic, or cajun seasoning.
It’s important to use “green” peanuts in this recipe (not roasted). Green peanuts are freshly picked and normally available between May and November. I purchased mine at my local farmer’s market, The Friendly Market. Enjoy!

I made these a few days ago. I had gotten 2 pounds of raw peanuts from Amazon. I have been craving them for some time now. They turned out wonderful. I added more water & salt through the cooking time. Just put 2 Quart baggies in the freezer & kept one out to eat. Thanks so much for a great recipe.

Morning, hope everyone is doing well and staying safe these harsh times.
I got 3 lbs of raw peanuts from our local Winn Dixie. Rinsed, place in the crockpot. For our taste, I put in just a little over a 1/3 cup of salt, I then poured 7-8 cups of water.
I let this soak for about an hour, then I turned the crockpot on low. I keep it on this setting and let this cook overnight as this was started late in the afternoon.
They turn out great every time, I think the slow cooking helps in the soaking of the salt. While I’m up or get up during the night, I’ll stir and check the water and add if needed.
Following morning, you got some great boiled peanuts. We started this during football season so we’d have them ready for kickoff and then, just keep the pot on warm during the game
Y’all try and enjoy.
Stay safe

We are going to try this. We want to cook some peanuts but not in the house because it’s too hot still. Thanks for the idea

Boiled peanuts can be stored in ziplock bags with brine in the freezer. They will be good for a few months and taste just as good once allowed to thaw. Eat them room temperature or heat them up in your microwave or stove top.

Are there other nuts that can be boiled in brine with spice and if so what qre they…and how

I let my soak in the fridge for 24 hours in the saltwater – right in the crockpot- before cooking. Also use quart bags for freezing so to have snacks throughout the year. Hard part is finding the green peanuts!

Amazon is where I got my 2lb dry but,I forgot too soak them overnight, soi started yesterday in crock pot on low (still cooking) it’s been 27hours almost perfect, love them to very soft,so you can just suck the seeds out of shell.
Roger says
I prefer mine very soft also…I cooked mine stovepot yesterday for the first time. I found I needed to cook them much longer than what the package said. I am going to try your recipe Kathleen

Amy @ The Blond Cook says
Hi John, I’ve never had that to happen so I can’t say with certainty what to do. Sorry I can’t be of more help!

I’m a southern boy from Florida l, and boiled peanuts abound! If you want juicy peanuts, be sure to let them sit in the brine for a good hour or two. They need time to soak up the flavor and brine.
Enjoy!

You can get raw peanuts in shell from Nuts .com as well as Amazon, but I far prefer Nuts. This recipe simplifies the cooking & watching, because of stovetop time and my tendancy to nap & let the water boil away *ahem* (so much smoke ) Thank you for this!

Thanks for sharing – Hope you enjoy the Crock Pot method! 🙂

Excited to try- after crock pot boiling what is the next step if you are unfamiliar with this treat. I’m guessing they are wet? Need to dry ? How do you store them? Need refrigeration? I will watch for a reply before I attemt to make thank you p.s also a boxer dog owner/lover!!
Amy @ The Blond Cook says
Hi Bev, yes they are wet and don’t dry them (keep the liquid with the peanuts). Once they have cooled I store them in a covered container in the fridge. I can’t say with certainty how long they last in the fridge because I always give away what I don’t eat to friends or they get all eaten at get-togethers. Hope you enjoy! 🙂
Capt Rich says
The given recipe works well but don’t be afraid to experiment with other spices. As far as storage. When I make a large batch, I will place a bunch in quart size zip lock bags and freeze them. Just pop them in the microwave bag and all. You’re ready to go when fresh green peanuts are out of season or just want a smaller portion

So where would you recommend looking for green peanuts if you’re stuck two thousand miles away in Utah? 🙂
Rita says
I found green peanuts at WalMart. I know it’s an unlikely place, but they were good!
Mary says
Amazon is where I got mine last year.
Smith says
Can you cook them on low for 12 hrs?
Amy @ The Blond Cook says
I can’t say for sure because I’ve only cooked them on high heat, but typically it is recommended to double the time if you’re cooking on low heat, so I would try 10-12 hours on low. Let me know how it works out for you! 🙂

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I assume that “Green Peanuts” are the same as “Raw Peanuts, that I can purchase at my local Publix here in Florida.
Amy @ The Blond Cook says
Hi Larry! Yes… Raw green peanuts. I hope you enjoy them!
Gary says
The peanuts from the grocery are dry raw peanuts usually not green raw peanuts.
Oleta Powell says
The peanuts I get at Publix are green raw peanuts. Though most of them seem to be mature. The boiled peanuts I remember from my childhood in Alabama were mostly immature. These you could eat she’ll and all!

Jenn says
Those dry peanuts are roasted, that’s why they aren’t green.
Kevin says
No, you can buy roasted or raw. Green has nothing to do with roasted or not…
charles goodwin says
mp raw peanuts have been processed and dried. green peanuts are as they com from the ground and just washed good. big difference especially in the finished boiled peanuts. raw peanuts are okay when boiled but not even comparable to green boiled peanuts. ‘you might get arrested in South Carolina for boiling raw instead of green.

No. .green peanuts are fresh from the ground. Raw peanuts are slightly dried out and are sold in a mesh bag.
Joe mc says
No s green peanut is a peanut that freshly dug out of the ground before it is dried. A raw peanut can be either green or dried. Either can be booked . Dried peanuts take longer to boil to tenderness. I find boiled green peanuts no not come out of the hill as easily as dried after they are done.
