This Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas and Ham recipe is ridiculously easy… and ready in a fraction of the time than when prepared on the stovetop. The best part is that no soaking of the beans is required!
This is a perfect way to recycle leftover ham for a savory pot of black-eyed peas. Serve with skillet cornbread for the ultimate comforting meal!
Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas Ingredients
- Dry black-eyed peas (1 pound)
- Fully cooked ham – cubed or shredded
- Yellow onion
- Chicken broth – I like to use low sodium so that I can better control the saltiness.
- Water
- Black pepper – I don’t use salt in this recipe because the ham provides enough saltiness for my taste, but feel free to season with salt after cooking (if desired).
- Bay leaf
How to Prepare
Following is a very brief overview of how to prepare. Please see the recipe card for full detailed instructions.
- Rinse and sort peas in a colander, removing and discarding any debris.
- Place all ingredients into the insert of your pressure cooker and stir to combine.
- Cook on high pressure for 16 minutes. Allow the pressure to naturally release for 20 minutes, then quick release the remaining pressure.
Total Time for Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas:
Cook times for Instant Pot recipes can sometimes be deceiving because of the time it takes the pot to reach pressure and pressure release times. This recipe takes right at around 1 hour to prepare from start to finish:
- 10 minutes prep time
- 16 minutes for the pot to reach pressure (this is how long it took my pot)
- 16 minutes high pressure cook time
- 20 minutes natural pressure release
If you prefer your peas a little on the firmer side, I recommend a 15 minute natural pressure release.
Enjoy!

Great recipe AND comments. Thanks!
So good! Was able to get this started and on the table in less than 45 minutes! New Years Day tradition saved! Only change would have been a quarter less broth and water.
I’ve never cared for Black Eyed Peas, but my husband likes them on New Year’s Day. So, I decided, why not try them in my new Instant Pot? This recipe couldn’t have been easier even though I only had 1/4 of the necessary peas. I cut all other ingredients down and it was perfect.
I did ours 20 minutes and 15 npr. Perfect.
These came out great. I added minced garlic
