    Homemade Apple Pie Spice

    So quick and easy, you probably have everything already at home to make this Homemade Apple Pie Spice so you’ll never have to buy it again!

    This post has been a long time coming and I apologize for the delay.  I’ve been meaning to post this since my amazingly simple and crazy delicious Apple Pie Bites have been the most popular recipe on the blog for over a year now.  So many people have asked, “What is apple pie spice?“.

    Well, it’s actually quite simple to make.  I did a lot of research online and saw that it always included allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon.  Sometimes ground ginger was added, and a lot of times cardamom was added.  I read the ingredients on the back of my apple pie spice container and cardamom was not mentioned in the ingredient list.  I still wanted to buy a bottle of cardamom just to see if it made it taste any better.  Cardamom was almost $15 for a small bottle!

    Never mind.  Besides, I’ve never used it in any recipes (as of yet), anyway!

    So I started playing around with the ingredients until I got it to taste pretty much exactly like my purchased bottle of apple pie spice… no cardamom needed!

    Homemade Apple Pie Spice

    Ingredients

    • 1–½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
    • 1–½ teaspoons ground nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon allspice

    Instructions

    1. Place ingredients in a small bowl and stir well to combine. Store in a small airtight container.
    • Prep Time: 2 mins

      I needed apple pie spice and it was nowhere to be found. I knew I had cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice so I decided to find a recipe on the Internet. All the recipes I found content cardamom. I don’t have cardamom and I have no idea what it adds to apple pie spice. During my search I ran across your article and recipe. Thank you so much for this post. Your recipe works fantastically for my apple cinnamon muffins.

        For years I have used Apple pie spice in my applesauce, a family favorite. None available anywhere. Thanks for the recipe and now a challenge to find cardamom!

          Cardamom adds something indescribable and magical to a spice mix. Almost every time I put cinnamon in something, I add cardamom, too. It is, unfortunately, up there among the most expensive spices, though. I either find it online, or I buy it at a grocery serving Middle Eastern and/or Indian customers because it has a regular place in their food and drink. If you know of a grocery store with a bulk spice section, you might be able to find it there (COVID has changed the ability to access this, so you might have no luck).

          Thank you for posting this; I wanted to know what to mix for some pie filling, and knew I was forgetting something. It was the allspice. 😉

            My local health food store has cardamom pods, seeds and ground for much less than a brand name bottles. I always refill my spices this way

      Thank you. Great recipe! I just wanted to tell you I am a cardamom user and while this recipe needs no fixing I just wanted to say i love cardamom it is used tons in German baking and will give you a whole new outlook on homemade pear sauce. A little goes a long way. My stolen recipe that makes 2 large loaves only needs 1/4 teaspoon but you miss it if it is not there. Just thought i would try to convince you of its joy.

        Cardamon is also used when making Finnish Cake, (actually a bread type recipe) and other Finnish pastries. So you may find cardamon in a shop that sells Scandinavian products. It is delicious.

          Regarding Allspice, I love it! I mix about 1 tablespoon of whole allspice with the whole pepper in my pepper mill. it is very fragrant and delicious!

      thank you for this reccipe! i love making southern fried apples and apple pie but apple pie spice is so expensive for a little bottle of it. I will be making this to make my apple pie for thanksgiving thursday!

      Hi,I’ve never commented before but I like the way you explained your recipe,but was real interested in your adventure with cardamon ,I would like to say you can use your cardamon for making homemade Chia tea,which includescinnamon,ginger,cardamon,allspice,milk or cream,an vanilla

          I appreciate your apple pie spice recipe so much. I have an attitude about paying $5 for such a small amount of spices. So, I began researching on line to figure out how make my own. I now, have find where i can buy in bulk cheaper to make my own. Wouldn’t that make an awesome gift? I’m going to try find some little jars and make several. Any suggestions where to buy in bulk w/o costing a lot?
          I also love your recipe for the mini apple pie bites.

I just googled “miniature jars for spices” online and a LOT of results came up for purchasing online… I’d try that first so you wouldn’t have to go searching for them in person.             small jars can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s craft stores. Good Luck and this is the recipe I will use from now on. Mine was close but I like yours better!!! You Rock!

            In reply to Mrs Calloway’s request for where to find bulk spices, Frontier is the brand i have been buying for years. Very high quality, like Tones. All natural and some organic. Look for bulk shelves in more serious natural (health) food stores. I get tiny ziploc bags at Michaels, like $3 for 100. That way spices are very easy to store and air tight. In midwest we have HyVee supermarkets with the Frontier spice canisters and a HUGE selection of bulk foods. Cardamom is really inexpensive in bulk and adds a deep sweet flavor, complimented by cinnamon, nutmeg and other sweet spices. Bon Appetit!! Karen, the Cookbook Collector
